2 killed, 9 hurt as bus plunges into ravine in Negros

(Philippines Twitter)-BACOLOD CITY, Philippines— (UPDATE 2) At least two persons were killed and 10 others were wounded Wednesday night when a bus, whose driver insisted on driving with defective headlights, fell into a ravine on the outskirts of San Carlos City in Negros Occidental. Five or six passengers were unaccounted for.

The report said one of the fatalities was the bus driver, citing initial information from San Carlos police deputy chief Senior Inspector Ariel Pico.

All the injured passengers, including four that were injured severely, were sent to nearby hospitals.

Chief Insp. Victorino Romanillos, acting chief of the San Carlos police, said they had yet to identify the second fatality.

The bus allegedly had faulty headlights while traveling through a foggy road. The headlights reportedly went off four times but the driver kept driving, until the bus fell into the ravine.

An investigation was underway.

Bad roads, poorly maintained vehicles and reckless driving are among the common causes for traffic accidents that kill hundreds in Philippine highways every year.
