Philippines Twitter—Another puzzle to police investigating the assault on Pilar Pilapil is that her missing companion worked as a housemaid who supposedly stole expensive jewelry from her employer.
Pilapil’s companion on the night the beauty-queen-turned-actress was stabbed repeatedly and left for dead actually owned the vehicle she was driving—and paid nearly half a million pesos for it in cold cash.
Chief Supt. Samuel Pagdilao Jr., the CIDG director, said Peñas bought the Kia Carens (CIZ 888) from one Romeo Jose dela Cuesta of Zabarte, Caloocan City, for P480,000.
“She bought the vehicle in spot cash through an agent for Dela Cuesta,” Pagdilao told reporters.
Policemen investigating the April 14 attack on Pilapil have yet to find Peñas and the vehicle that she had claimed was owned by Unilever Philippines.
Pagdilao said a woman had sought the CIDG’s assistance in filing a case of qualified theft against Peñas for purportedly stealing jewelry and other valuables from her.
He said the “possible victim,” whom he declined to name, claimed Peñas worked as a housemaid for her family about two years ago, and was able to identify Peñas through the photographs that the CIDG had released to the media.
“The woman said Peñas suddenly disappeared with her expensive jewelry and other valuables,” Pagdilao said.
Senior Supt. Joel Napoleon Coronel, chief of SITG Pilar, said Nelson Peñas seldom saw his wife because he was staying most of the time in Cebu.
Peñas, on the other hand, was staying with relatives in Dumaguete City and Metro Manila, Pagdilao said.
Pagdilao also quoted Nelson Peñas as saying that he once saw an ID card with his wife’s photograph and another name.
But he conceded that “what we have now is pure speculation.”
Pagdilao said investigators were also looking into the possibility that Peñas and the two knife-wielding men who had attacked Pilapil belonged to a criminal group such as a car theft syndicate.
